The Sound of Szczecin on MUSIC.DESIGN.FORM Festival
A horn, the squeal of tires, the rattling of tram wheels, the "popping" of signals at pedestrian crossings, an ambulance siren ... the repertoire of sounds in each major city is enormous, and has been noticed by many composers. However, nobody yet has created a sound image of Szczecin. The Sound of Szczecin will be recorded during an exceptional action to become the foundation of the premiere song "The Sound of Szczecin" on 17th-18th April, where originally marked BMW electric cars, driven by well-known residents of Szczecin, will take to the streets of Szczecin. The experimental musical piece "The Sound of Szczecin" will be the first musical experiment of its kind, the effect of which will be presented on the last day of the MUSIC.DESIGN.FORM Festival at the Symphony Hall of the Philharmonic in Szczecin. BMW Dealer Bońkowscy is the partner of the event.
The project will be attended by well-known residents of Szczecin, including musicians, actors, journalists and representatives of cultural institutions, who on 17th and 18th April will be roaming the city in specially marked BMW cars. Drivers include: professor. Kamil Kuskowski (painter, visual artist, Dean of the Department of Painting and New Media, head of the Audiovisual and Performative School), Jarosław Jaz (journalist, editor), Dorota Serwa (director of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin), Rafał Hajdukiewicz (actor, Teatr Puppet Pleciuga), Dariusz Mikuła (director of the Kana Theater, actor), Eddy Volcano (the longest acting DJ from Szczecin), as well as many other people who have made a huge contribution to the cultural development of Szczecin. – Each car will be equipped with geodata collecting devices, which – to put it in a nutshell – will be converted into binary codes, and then into music codes. They will become the basis for the creation of the experimental piece "The Sound of Szczecin" – says Kinga Rabińska from the Philharmonic in Szczecin, who is running the project. The final shape of the composition will depend on the speed of the ride, the course of the route, the time of day, the frequency of stops, as well as many other factors.
The effect of the whole action, i.e. the musical composition "The Sound of Szczecin" will be premiered by the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and the synth-pop group Apparatjik, which includes: Magne Furuholmen, member and founder of the band "A-ha" (guitarist and keyboardist) , Jonas Bjerre from the Danish rock band "Mew" (vocalist and guitarist) and Martin Terefe (drummer and producer). "The Sound of Szczecin" will be one of the points of the program of the final concert "Dimensions of Music Form", during which the piece "A Heroine for our time – the artist Julia Pastrana" will also be performed. The story of a peculiar woman with a beard – Julia Pastrana, her fate and loneliness will be told by Apparatjik with the use of music and light images created together with the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, as well as Concha Buika – Spanish singer and composer. Both songs will be heard on the last day of the MUSIC.DESIGN.FORM festival, September 23rd at 19.00 in the Symphony Hall of the Philharmonic in Szczecin.
Information about ticket prices and dates of sale will be available on the website devoted to the festival mdf.filharmonia.szczecin.pl.
