They affect the place where we function, our life energy. They are a reflection of who we are. You will be able to find out about this during the Beliani Arvika exhibition presented in the lobby of the Philharmonic Hall, which will be arranged for the duration of the festival with Beliani furniture.

This mobility, combined with the creativity of the designers, invites the user into a specific dialogue with the design. The presented works were created at the Department of Interior Architecture and Application Forms at the Faculty of Visual Arts at the Academy of Art in Szczecin. The authors of the works are: Katarzyna Dobrowolska [pouf], Urszula Kalczyńska [cone of light], Julia Kusa [sofa triad], Zofia Szczepaniak [Bøyd2].

Simple and elegant sofas, functional tables, interior design elements designed with the utmost care in cooperation with the most creative names from the world of architecture and design are the quintessence of contemporary design. The manufacturer cooperates with local craftsmen all over the world, using their skills to create smart solutions and objects that are modern and at the same time timeless.

During the lecture, musical concepts, concerning new technical and aesthetic possibilities, as well as discovering the connection between music, fine arts and contemporary urban lifestyle will be presented. The lecture will be led by professor Sabine Sanio, lecturer at the Department of Sound and Sonic Arts of the University of Art in Berlin, the only woman dealing with the theory and history of audial culture at this Berlin school. She’s the author of numerous publications as well as radio broadcasts in the field of media theory and aesthetics.

I met Tim Fain during the tour of “The Book of Longing,” an evening based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen. In that work, all of the instrumentalists had solo parts. Shortly after that tour, Tim asked me to compose some solo violin music for him. I quickly agreed. Having been very impressed by his ability and interpretation of my work, I decided on a seven-movement piece. I thought of it as a Partita, the name inspired by the solo clavier and solo violin music of Bach. The music of that time included dance-like movements, often a chaconne, which represented the compositional practice. What inspired me about these pieces was that they allowed the composer to present a variety of music composed within an overall structure. I set to work almost at once and began with the first three pieces. I divided the chaconne into two parts separated by several other movements. The Orchard (1992)

The Orchard is a composition created for The Screens, a play written by French dramatist Jean Genet. In 1989 Joanne Akalaitis directed Paul Schmidt’s translation at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, with original music by Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso.

Pendulum (2010)

Music for Pendulum was first introduced as a commissioned work for the American Civil Liberty Union’s 90th Anniversary in 2010. It was originally composed as a one-movement work for violin, cello, and piano. It is meant to be energetic and bravura in style. Recently, I worked with Tim Fain to re-arrange the piece for violin and piano. The spirit of the work and its name has remained the same  – Philip Glass

The discussion panel “Durability, usefulness, beauty, and what next?” will be devoted to issues of contemporary design. It will be led by Radosław Gajda – academic lecturer, architect and urban planner, founder of the most popular video blog on architecture and art "Architecture is a good idea". Among the guests invited to the discussion are: Trine Blicher Folmer from the Danish architectural studio "Getto" and Tomasz Sachanowicz – lecturer at the West Pomeranian University of Technology, architect, founder of the website and blog "Architektura w Szczecinie" (in English: “Architecture in Szczecin”). The discussion panel will be an excellent opportunity to confront knowledge and views on the direction of development in contemporary design, as well as an attempt to capture the current state of this field.

Beardyman's performance
Beardyman is an artist specializing in beatboxing, looping sounds and creating live compositions, sometimes inspired by audience prompts. As part of the MDF Festival, the artist will make an improvised performance of a variety of musical genres. The final part of the concert will take a form of a set, in which the artist will mix all the sound sequences from each musical genre. All movements and the creation of sounds will be recorded by cameras and displayed on the wall of the lobby of the philharmonic. Two-time British Beatbox Champion, pseudo-DJ, YouTube superstar, producer and overall badass.

"King of sound and ruler of beats" – that's what BBC Radio says about Beardyman. In 2006, he took part in the UK Beatbox Championship for the first time and came first. A year later he was unrivaled again! In 2008, he was asked to become a juror in this championship because nobody wanted to compete against him. Beardyman is not just a beatboxer, he is also a great vocalist, cabaret artist and DJ. In a recent interview for British DJ Mag; he said: "I am an entertainer. Part comedian, part beatboxer, part pseudo DJ, part live producer". He inserts humour into his sets, cajoling the audience into a unique mood. Using bespoke electronic machinery (the BEARDYTRON_5000), he loops his vocal samples, creating a real dancefloor bomb. His concerts often turn into regular parties playing inspirations with drum and bass, dubstep and even techno.

KODA Kids group specializes in workshops for children in the field of architecture and design. For several years, KODA Kids has been trying to expand children's sensitivity and to direct the attention of the youngest to decoding of space, by hosting architectural workshops. The group is represented by: Aleksandra Rus, Katarzyna Zwolak and Edyta Waszak, graduates of the Szczecin University of Technology in the field of Architecture and Urban Planning. They deal with conducting architectural workshops for children and youth, and run their own architectural studio. As part of education, the KODA Kids group has completed workshops, including those:
● at the Kids Love Design festival (2012-2014) in cooperation with the Artmosphere Foundation,
● in the Trafostacja Sztuki in Szczecin (2014),
● at the Youth Palace in Szczecin (2015),
● at the Westival festival (2013-2016) organized by SARP,
● in the "Tworzę się" gallery in cooperation with the Media Dizajn Association and the Las Sztuki Association,
● at the Gdynia Design Days festival (2016 and 2017).

The group has also carried out design workshops on creating a mascot for the Philharmonic in Szczecin (2018).

Celem warsztatów jest m.in. budowanie zaangażowanej społeczności twórców, którzy aktywnie i świadomie podejmują działania, zmierzające do poprawy jakości otaczającej ich przestrzeni miejskiej. Uczestnicy warsztatów zostaną m.in. zabrani na spacer ulicami Szczecina, podczas którego wspólnie określą potrzeby miasta związane z daną przestrzenią, a także możliwe rozwiązania i ulepszenia. Zajęcia poprowadzi Trine Blicher Folmer – znana duńska architekt i właścicielka studia Getto, zajmującego się trzema aspektami planowania miasta: fizycznym, społecznym i mentalnym.

Czy jesteś ciekawy swojego miasta, jego tożsamości i wszystkiego pomiędzy? Co widzimy? Co czujemy? Odpowiedzi znajdziemy w trakcie warsztatu, podczas którego zbudujemy fizyczne marzenia na temat Szczecina. Spacerując po mieście, poczujemy przestrzenie i życie toczące się między budynkami. Przeszukamy i odwiedzimy skryte miejsca, które posiadają własny potencjał i stawiają własne wyzwania. Przetłumaczymy wrażenia ze spaceru na propozycje architektoniczne lub interwencje dla wybranych przestrzeni miejskich. „Sense Szczecin – building dreams for your city” to warsztaty twórcze, ukierunkowane na proces, podczas którego zbudujemy fizyczne modele w małej skali z różnych materiałów. Dzięki temu w nowy sposób stworzymy więzi między miastem a człowiekiem poprzez: zmysły, formę i funkcję.

Each composition constitutes a sound mark of the respective square in Szczecin – Plac Grunwaldzki, Orła Białego, Plac Rodła and others. The creators of the compositions are ten composers, both women and men, from all over Poland: Aleksandra Garbal, Alicja Gronau, Aleksandra Kościów, Artur Kroschel, Monika Kędziora, Magdalena Cynk, Olga Hans, Sławomir Zamuszko, Artur Cieślak. Szczecin has its representative composer in the form of Janusz Stalmierski, renown for his famous bugle-call in Szczecin.
The common idea in the music is a short melodic and rhythmic motif used by all the composers, where the application, development and insertion of the motif into the sound body is left to the creator’s invention. In this way, each piece takes form of a RONDO with a five-piece polygenic texture, the result of five instrumental voices such as: flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon.

The youngest listeners will be encouraged during the concert to interact, which shapes active listening. Children and young people, as well as their guardians, will be, in a sense, the creators of each part of the work, performing specific tasks for a musical motif common to all of them.
Thanks to visuals correlated with the music, the concert will have a multimedia dimension. For the first time in the Chamber Hall of the Philharmonic in Szczecin, a 3D mapping technique will be used, applying a two-dimensional image to a three-dimensional object.

The logotypes will be played by musicians from the FeelHarmony Quintet (Anna Wojnowicz-Drężek – flute, Izabela Kokosińska – oboe, Bogusław Jakubowski – clarinet, Edyta Moroz – French horn, Katarzyna Sułkowska – bassoon), who successfully perform contemporary music and are open to any of the challenges of new art. Thanks to the versatility of the ensemble, the composers will be able to reach unconventional means, including going beyond traditional concert productions.

Hellfish (Julian Cobb) – one of the most significant producers of dance and experimental electronic music over 160 bpm. The musical activity of the artist, covering hardcore and breakbeat, is almost as long as the history of these genres. Since 1992 he has been providing sound system medium of the highest quality wherever there is rave culture in stronger varieties. Since then, Hellfish has brought to life interesting musical phenomena that are still popular today. He also managed to work out a unique and unrepeatable style of music creation. In the history of the toughest varieties of electronics, he also became a publisher and promoter, creating the legendary label Deathchant.

Rombanka Soundsystem – the oldest breakcore collective in Poland and one of the oldest continuously operating in Europe, will perform. The collective Rombanka Soundsystem is the oldest breakcore collective in Poland and one of the oldest continuously operating in Europe. It was founded in 2007 in Szczecin, and associates producers, DJs and promoters of D.i.Y. culture, oriented to more serious types of electronic music, such as breakcore, hardcore, and experimenta. The group deals with socializing music content under the name of Turn It Off Recordz, and organizes events, both official in clubs throughout the country and a large part of the Old Continent, as well as underground free parties and teknivals.

Hachiwari TV – a multimedia project based on real-time visualizations without the participation of a computer. It includes the phenomena of spontaneous synthesis of a moving image. The project delivers the synthesis and transmission of the resulting image on the site where the "action" takes place, thus preserving allegiance to the ancient assumptions of the unity of time, place and events – just like the ancient comedy and tragedy that unfolds before the eyes of the audience. Here the medium is a television that emits unusual configurations of forms, colors and intensities of moving vision. They become an instrument of personal liberation of the viewer from the chains of associations and conditions of perception. An attentive recipient will see a thread of personal history emerging from the magnetic fields, calling for further exploration.

“The Sound of Szczecin”
The composition is the result of an exceptional action that was carried out in Szczecin. In April, the city streets were roamed in specially marked cars by well-known residents of Szczecin, including musicians, actors, journalists and representatives of cultural institutions. The cars were equipped with geodata recording devices, which was later transformed into binary codes, and these – into music codes. As a result, more than an eight-hour base of material was created, containing quite accidental sounds, maintained in a single-voice texture. From among many sound motifs appearing, the author of arrangement and orchestration of the piece – Mateusz Czarnowski chose the 20 most interesting ones and based on them the core of the composition. This is how ‘The Sound of Szczecin’ was created, which will have its premiere performed by the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Rune Bergmann and the synth-pop group Apparatjik. It will be a unique opportunity to hear what Szczecin sounds like.

“A Heroine for our time – the artist Julia Pastrana”
The concert will constitute the world premiere of the orchestral version of the composition ‘Heroine of our time’. It was based on musical material for an opera about the tragic life of Mexican circus artist Julia Pastrana – the famous woman with a beard who was an attraction in 19th-century Europe. The story about the fate and loneliness of the heroine will be told by musical images created by the Apparatjik group, the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Rune Bergmann, and also BUIKA – the Spanish singer and composer.

Apparatjik – a Scandinavian band known for its avant-garde approach to synth-pop sound. Currently, it is made up of: Magne Furuholmen, member and founder of the band "A-ha" (guitarist and keyboardist), Jonas Bjerre from the Danish ensemble "Mew" (vocalist and guitarist) and Martin Terefe (drummer and producer). The ensemble members share not only a unique sound, but also the way of approaching the possibilities of artistic expression i.a. through visual arts. There will be an occasion to see it through your own eyes during this unique concert-performance.

BUIKA (María Concepción Balboa Buika) – singer, composer, producer of her own albums and poet in one. She was born in Mallorca, Spain, but comes from the Bubi tribe of Equatorial Guinea. She belongs to those artists who help build multicultural and multidimensional structures of art. She oscillates between different genres of music: jazz, soul, reggae, afro beat and r'n'b, flavoring them with a characteristic flamenco accent. During the concert, the artist will play the role of the protagonist of the musical story – Julia Pastrana.
